Nipple care

After each feeding, coat nipples with some breast milk.

Allow nipples to air dry.

If cracked, apply 100% lanolin to nipples after feedings. (If allergic to wool, do not use lanolin.)

Make sure the infant is latching correctly.

If sore, begin feeding on the less sore nipple.

If the pain is severe, may need to pump until nipples heal and contact your OB/GYN.

Plugged ducts: Hard, tender lump in your breast, caused by incomplete emptying of the breast milk.

Nurse on the tender side first.

Massage the breast with the lump, trying to express extra milk.

Apply moist heat to breast. Shower or bathe while massaging and expressing extra milk.
